Pure foolishness

I am reading around the texts in 1 Corinthians that I am preaching on this coming Sunday and came across where Paul says, "We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ." (4:10 NIV)

I laughed. I don't know if I've ever been a fool for Christ, but I've certainly made myself a fool in the eyes of even myself trying to follow him. Either some decisions I've made are the best decisions that could have been made, or they were wretchedly foolish and regretted to this day.

I can't decide which. Honestly, I don't know if it's possible for me to decide which. My mind wonders to where Paul says his conscience is clear but that doesn't make him innocent (1 Cor 4:4). How do I know what was foolish and what was selfless?

Anything selfless is foolish in the eyes of the world. If you don't consider yourself, you can't consider another. Maybe the world is right. Maybe Jesus is.

"For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel,a will save it." Mark 8:35 NRSV
